Some of my friends had gone the year before and the lineup looked ace, but apart from that I expected it to be similar to other festivals I had previously attended (naive, I know, being held in Digbeth in October). What I found and have continued to find from going to every Supersonic since then was completely different. Over the past 5 years Supersonic has almost totally redefined my taste in music, in one conversation I have even described music I listen to as 'you know, like Supersonic-stuff'. You have introduced me to music I would always have been curious to find, but possibly never got around to hearing, without them being on in the gap between Merzbow and Bong (I’m pretty sure that line-up didn’t happen, but you know what I mean).

Because of this, it’s really great to hear you are taking a year off to work everything out and to bring something even better next year. For future Supersonics it would be amazing for you to keep on putting together challenging and diverse lineups, alongside the talks, workshops and screenings which are another big part of the festival for me.

It would also be ace for you to put things on across the city, spreading into different types of spaces and attracting new people to Supersonic, but at the same time still keeping a core part of the festival in Digbeth. One thing I really missed at last years’ Supersonic was having a space to be able to spend time in, talk to people about what we had just seen, and allow my ears to start working again before going on to the next thing (I don’t mean this in a whiney way, just something that I thought!)

Thanks so much for creating Supersonic, I can’t wait for 2017.

Re: Supersonic news

Lisa / Team Capsule!

I will miss Supersonic this year but I am all for a bit of downtime to reassess and come back stronger than ever...and if anyone can pull that off I feel it's you!

I have followed your work since becoming aware of you over a decade ago. It was a significant boon having you around when I spent some years living in Birmingham and your events have continued to draw me back to the city ever since. Supersonic (and Capsule programming in general) offer a unique blend of influences that overlap with some of my own but also always stretch me beyond what I already know. A trusted source of quality art/music that is guaranteed to challenge me...and always in a friendly and safe setting. Thank you. Oh and some of the "comebacks" you have helped stage have been nothing short of WTF!!?

I also owe you a debt of gratitude as an artist. When you saw me play as Glatze and then took me under your wing you gave me confidence and support I hadn't experienced elsewhere. I am so pleased this has carried on throughout my artistic development and I know I can call on you at any point, which is such a great help...

One thing I might like to see you test - but I am biased as I would happily put myself forward for this - is to have more of the central programming "guest curated"...or at least drawn from a pool that spans more specialisms, for you to then bring together. I think you do this really well with your series of "guest curated" sub-events but I could see this working with some of the main acts too. Obviously, you do this to some extent by asking for suggestions but I always wonder how successful this actually is in casting the net more widely.

I'll come back to you on what collaborations / developments I'd like to see but I wanted to get some initial thoughts down to show my support for the amazing work you do! Whatever it is you decide to do with it, if you can apply the Capsule/Supersonic ethos I have no doubt it will be great.

Will add some more comments in due course but for now >> BIG UP! X

Re: Supersonic news

I'm sad there's not going to be one this year, Supersonic is about the best festival there is - always enjoyable and challenging stuff in abundance. I quite like the way it moves around but it could possibly do with a more secure home, I'm guessing the recent abrupt closure of Alfie Bird's is to do with spiralling costs that are a problem for Supersonic as well...

Re: Supersonic news

Really sad news.

The music and arts scene was one of the prime motivators for me to recently make the move to Birmingham (after years of jealously looking at Capsule gig lineups from the far flung wastelands of the East Midlands), with Capsule/ Supersonic being the main draw for me.

By the time I managed to save up and make the move (about 9 months ago now) there's a HUGE gap that's been left in the sort of gigs that Capsule (used to?) put on, and that I used to jealously look at Birmingham as hosting. Bands that seem tailor made for that audience have been playing Leicester/ Derby/ Nottingham in the past year, and are skipping Birmingham entirely now. Hopefully you guys come back re-invigorated and that there are some of the amazing Birmingham based Capsule hosted gigs before the next festival.

I'm sure there are a lot of us who would love to offer some sort of assistance and support to help out and restore Birmingham music scene to it's former glory. Any specifics we could help out with would be great to hear!

Re: Xmas Cocktail photos

Awesome Photos!!!! In addition the Brum scene is often wrongly characterised as only being about bland and unfashionable bands like Duran Duran and UB40, as well as the relatively niche metal genre. Stuff like Steel Pulse, Au Pairs and The Prefects (and early period UB40) are overlooked too often.

Re: Deliving into the Delia Derbyshire archives

Hello there.
